Netflix is charging extra fees for "shared accounts"

Netflix is crackling down on account piracy and unsecure account sharing.

In a recent press release, the streaming giant announced that they are testing out new features that will combat the aforementioned issues. Notably, the features are being piloted in Chile, Puerto Rico, and Peru โ€” countries where piracy is rampant.

Netflix will start charging fees to users who share their accounts outside their households by sharing their passwords. The new payment scheme is supposedly meant to make the experience of account sharing safer, dynamic, and… you know, legitimate.

  • Add an Extra Member: Members on our Standard and Premium plans will be able to add sub accounts for up to two people they donโ€™t live with – each with their own profile, personalized recommendations, login and password – at a lower price: 2,380 CLP in Chile, 2.99 USD in Costa Rica, and 7.9 PEN in Peru;
  • Transfer Profile to a New Account: Members on our Basic, Standard, and Premium plans can enable people who share their account to transfer profile information either to a new account or an Extra Member sub account – keeping the viewing history, My List, and personalized recommendations.

This shouldn’t concern you (yet) as Netflix hasn’t confirmed plans to expand it. For now, they aim to “understand the utility of these two features for members in these three countries before making changes anywhere else in the world.”
